Aries tarot card: The Emperor

Aries, Mesh rashi in Hindi, is the first sign of the zodiac, a fire sign ruled by Mars. It is the sign of beginnings: quick to act, direct in speech and happiest when there is something new to start. Its tarot card is The Emperor. The links on these pages come from the Golden Dawn system that most modern decks follow and use Western (tropical) sun signs, so your Vedic rashi may be a different sign.

21 March to 19 April · Rashi: Mesh · Element: Fire

Why The Emperor is the card of Aries

The Emperor sits on a stone throne carved with rams’ heads, the symbol of Aries, with armour under his robe. Mars gives Aries its drive, and the Sun, which is exalted in Aries, gives it the will to lead. The Emperor shows what that fire becomes when it builds something lasting: order, rules, protection and responsibility for others. For an Aries the card is a reminder that starting first is only half of leading. The other half is staying to look after what you started. The full meaning of The Emperor

The three decan cards of Aries

Each sign is split into three decans of 10°, about ten days each, and each decan has a Minor Arcana card and a ruling planet. Aries runs through the Two of Wands (Mars, roughly 21 to 30 March), the Three of Wands (the Sun, 31 March to 9 April) and the Four of Wands (Venus, 10 to 19 April). The Two shows a man holding a globe and weighing a plan, the Three watches his ships come in, and the Four celebrates under a garland at the gate of home. Plan, wait, celebrate: the rhythm of the sign itself.

The suit of Aries

Aries is a Fire sign, so its suit is Wands, the suit of the same element. All the Wands cards

Strengths the cards show

  • Courage to go first
  • Plain, honest speech
  • Energy that gets things moving

What the cards suggest working on

The hard side of Aries shows in its own suit: the Seven of Wands fighting on every front, the Knight of Wands charging before the plan is ready. The lesson is follow-through. Pick the project that has waited longest for you and give it one finished step this week before starting anything new. Before a hard conversation, pause long enough to hear the other person out. Your courage does more good when people feel you have listened.

Questions about Aries in tarot

Which tarot card is Aries?
The Emperor. In the Western tarot tradition each sign has one Major Arcana card, and The Emperor is the card of Aries.
Which tarot suit is Aries?

Aries is a Fire sign, and Fire is the element of the suit of Wands.

Which Minor Arcana cards belong to Aries?

The Two of Wands, Three of Wands and Four of Wands, one for each 10° part (decan) of the sign, in that order.

Is my tarot sign the same as my Vedic rashi?

Not always. Tarot uses the Western (tropical) zodiac, while Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is now about 24° behind it. So anyone born in roughly the first three weeks of a Western sign’s dates usually has the sign before it as their Vedic Sun sign, and the rashi most Indians go by is the Moon sign, which can be different again.
