Scorpio tarot card: Death

Scorpio, Vrishchik rashi in Hindi, is the eighth sign, a water sign ruled by Mars in traditional astrology (modern Western astrologers add Pluto). Scorpio feels deeply, guards its privacy and is fiercely loyal once it trusts. It is drawn to what lies under the surface of people and events. Its tarot card is Death, which is far less frightening than its name.

23 October to 21 November · Rashi: Vrishchik · Element: Water

Why Death is the card of Scorpio

Death rides a white horse and carries a black banner marked with a white rose. The people before him react in different ways: a king has fallen, while a child looks up without fear. Behind him the sun rises between two towers. In tarot the card almost never means physical death. It means an ending that clears the way for a new stage. Scorpio knows this cycle from the inside, because it lets things end completely and then rebuilds. The card asks it to release what is finished instead of guarding it. The full meaning of Death

The three decan cards of Scorpio

Scorpio’s decans sit in the middle of the Cups. The Five of Cups (Mars, roughly 23 October to 1 November) shows a cloaked figure mourning three spilled cups while two still stand behind: grief, and what remains. The Six of Cups (the Sun, 2 to 11 November) shows a child handing flowers in a cup to a younger one: memory, childhood and kindness from the past. The Seven of Cups (Venus, 12 to 21 November) shows cups floating in the clouds, filled with jewels, a snake and a castle: tempting options and illusions. Loss, memory and desire, all felt in depth.

The suit of Scorpio

Scorpio is a Water sign, so its suit is Cups, the suit of the same element. All the Cups cards

Strengths the cards show

  • Loyal and perceptive
  • Brave in a crisis
  • Honest about what really matters

What the cards suggest working on

The Five of Cups is the Scorpio lesson in a single picture: so much attention on what was lost that the two full cups behind go unseen. Old hurts, kept close, grow heavy. Write down one grudge or disappointment you are ready to put down, and one thing you still have and value. Trust can be built in small steps: share one private thought with one person and see how it is received.

Questions about Scorpio in tarot

Which tarot card is Scorpio?
Death. In the Western tarot tradition each sign has one Major Arcana card, and Death is the card of Scorpio.
Which tarot suit is Scorpio?

Scorpio is a Water sign, and Water is the element of the suit of Cups.

Which Minor Arcana cards belong to Scorpio?

The Five of Cups, Six of Cups and Seven of Cups, one for each 10° part (decan) of the sign, in that order.

Is my tarot sign the same as my Vedic rashi?

Not always. Tarot uses the Western (tropical) zodiac, while Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is now about 24° behind it. So anyone born in roughly the first three weeks of a Western sign’s dates usually has the sign before it as their Vedic Sun sign, and the rashi most Indians go by is the Moon sign, which can be different again.
