Why The Devil is the card of Capricorn
The Devil, horned like the goat of Capricorn, sits above two chained figures. Look closely and the chains around their necks are loose enough to lift off. The card is about what binds us with our own consent: habits, fears, money worries, status, a role we cannot step out of. Capricorn opens the numbered Pentacles. The Two of Pentacles (Jupiter, roughly 22 to 31 December) shows a young man juggling two coins in a loop while ships ride high waves behind him: balancing demands. The Three of Pentacles (Mars, 1 to 9 January) shows a stonemason at work in a church, consulting two others: skilled work recognised and shared. The Four of Pentacles (the Sun, 10 to 19 January) shows a man clutching one coin, with another on his crown and two under his feet: security that tightens into fear of loss.
