Why The Chariot is the card of Cancer
The charioteer rides out from a walled city in armour, with crescent moons on his shoulders for the Moon that rules Cancer. Two sphinxes, one black and one white, sit before the chariot, and there are no reins: he holds them by will alone. The armour is the crab’s shell, the protection that lets a sensitive person go out into the world. The three decan cards of Cancer
The Cups hold Cancer’s three decans. The Two of Cups (Venus, roughly 21 June to 1 July) shows two people exchanging cups: a bond, a partnership, a promise. The Three of Cups (Mercury, 2 to 11 July) shows three friends raising their cups among the harvest: shared joy. The Four of Cups (the Moon, 12 to 22 July) shows a young man under a tree, arms folded, ignoring a cup held out to him from a cloud: withdrawal, and an offer nearly missed.
