Vasant Panchami is the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright half of Magha. It is traditionally linked with Saraswati, the goddess of learning and music, and with the coming of spring.

All times are IST. Tithi times hold for all of India; sunrise, sunset, moonrise and the muhurat windows are for Nagpur, in the North and Central Indian (purnimanta) tradition, and shift by a few minutes in other cities.

How it is commonly observed

Many families and schools do a Saraswati puja, often placing books, pens or instruments near the image.
Yellow clothes and yellow food, such as saffron rice or boondi, are common.
Some families choose this day for a child to write the first letters (akshar abhyas or vidyarambh).

Where regions differ

In West Bengal, Odisha and Assam it is a major Saraswati Puja day in homes and schools. In Punjab and parts of North India it is Basant, with kite flying.

How the date is worked out

The rule: the day when the tithi runs during purvahna, the forenoon from sunrise to midday. When two days qualify, the one where the tithi covers more of that window; when none does, the day the tithi begins. The Sun and Moon positions are computed for each year (sidereal, Lahiri ayanamsa), so the dates are not copied from a printed list.

The forenoon (purvahna), from sunrise to midday: the festival is kept on the day Panchami runs then, and the Saraswati puja is commonly done in that part of the morning while Panchami lasts. The table gives that puja time for Nagpur. In some years Panchami begins after sunrise, so the day can start on Chaturthi.

Is Vasant Panchami good for starting studies?

Many families treat it as a good day to begin learning or start a child’s education. For a personal muhurat, a panchang check against the child’s chart is the usual way.

Why does another calendar show a different date?

A tithi begins and ends at the same moment all over India, but the festival day depends on the part of the day the tradition looks at (sunrise, midday, evening or midnight) and on the sunrise of the city. A panchang for another city or tradition can therefore differ by a day. Follow the one your family uses.
