Akshaya Tritiya 2027: date and forenoon puja muhurat

Akshaya Tritiya is the Tritiya (third day) of Vaishakha Shukla paksha. Akshaya means "never diminishing", and by tradition prayer, charity and good work done on this day keep their merit. According to tradition it is the birth day of Parashurama, and some texts count it as the first day of a yuga (the Treta Yuga in some, the Satya Yuga in others).

How it is commonly observed

  • Many families do a Vishnu and Lakshmi puja in the morning, in the forenoon while Tritiya runs.
  • Daan is a large part of the day: a pot of water (jal kalash), grain, sattu, fruit or clothes, given according to means.
  • Buying gold or something lasting is a popular custom, and many people choose the day for a new start, a griha pravesh or a wedding without fixing a separate muhurat.
  • Parashurama Jayanti is kept on or around this day; it is looked at in the evening, so when Tritiya has begun by the evening before, it falls a day earlier.

Where regions differ

It is called Akha Teej in Rajasthan and Gujarat and Akti in Chhattisgarh. In Odisha the building of the Puri Rath Yatra chariots begins and farmers start the season’s sowing. The Gangotri and Yamunotri temples reopen for the year on this day. Jains keep it as the day Rishabhanatha, the first Tirthankara, ended his long fast with sugarcane juice, and many end the year-long Varshitap fast then.

All the regional calendars on this site that list it give the same date in 2027.

How the date is worked out

The rule: the day when the tithi runs during purvahna, the forenoon from sunrise to midday. When the tithi touches the forenoon of two days, the first day is taken; the second only when the tithi lasts at least 3 muhurtas (a fifth of the daytime) after its sunrise. The Sun and Moon positions are computed for each year (sidereal, Lahiri ayanamsa), so the dates are not copied from a printed list.

Questions about Akshaya Tritiya

When is Akshaya Tritiya in 2027?

Akshaya Tritiya 2027 is on Sunday, 9 May 2027, and in 2028 on Thursday, 27 Apr 2028. The dates are worked out for Nagpur in the North and Central Indian tradition; the table above gives the tithi and muhurat times.

Why do some calendars give the next day?

Tritiya often begins in the late morning and ends early the next morning. Calendars that go only by the tithi at sunrise then take the second day. The forenoon rule used here, the one drikpanchang follows, takes the first day unless Tritiya lasts at least three muhurtas (about two and a half hours) after the next sunrise. Follow the panchang your family uses.

Do I have to buy gold on Akshaya Tritiya?

No. Buying gold is a popular custom, not a rule of the day. By tradition the day is for prayer, daan and good work, and a small purchase within your means, or none at all, keeps it just as well.

Why does another calendar show a different date?

A tithi begins and ends at the same moment all over India, but the festival day depends on the part of the day the tradition looks at (sunrise, midday, evening or midnight) and on the sunrise of the city. A panchang for another city or tradition can therefore differ by a day. Follow the one your family uses.
