Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, is the Dashami (tenth day) of Ashwin Shukla paksha, right after Navratri. It is kept as a day of victory: according to tradition, the day of Shri Ram’s victory over Ravana, and in the Devi tradition the goddess Durga’s victory over Mahishasura.

How it is commonly observed
- Effigies of Ravana are burnt in the evening in many towns in North and Central India.
- Many families do Shami puja and Aparajita puja, and exchange apta leaves as "gold" (sone) in Maharashtra; in some places shami leaves are given instead.
- Tools, vehicles and books are worshipped (Ayudha puja) in many homes, often on Navami or Dashami.
- Many people see it as a good day to begin something new.
Where regions differ
In West Bengal it is Bijoya Dashami, the immersion of Durga, and Bengal calendars can give it a day later. In Karnataka it is Mysuru Dasara. Nagpur also marks Dhammachakra Pravartan Din on Vijayadashami.
All the regional calendars on this site that list it give the same date in 2027.
How the date is worked out
The rule: the day when the tithi runs during aparahna, the fourth fifth of the daytime. When two days qualify, the one where the tithi covers more of that window; when none does, the day the tithi begins. The Sun and Moon positions are computed for each year (sidereal, Lahiri ayanamsa), so the dates are not copied from a printed list.
Questions about Dussehra
When is Dussehra in 2027?
Dussehra 2027 is on Saturday, 9 Oct 2027, and in 2028 on Wednesday, 27 Sep 2028. The dates are worked out for Nagpur in the North and Central Indian tradition; the table above gives the tithi and muhurat times.
What is the Vijay muhurat?
The eleventh of the fifteen muhurtas of the daytime, commonly treated as the most auspicious part of Vijayadashami for starting work, travel or a purchase. The table gives it for Nagpur.
Is Dussehra a good day for a new start?
Many families treat the whole day as auspicious. For a personal start, the panchang is usually checked against your own chart as well.
Why does another calendar show a different date?
A tithi begins and ends at the same moment all over India, but the festival day depends on the part of the day the tradition looks at (sunrise, midday, evening or midnight) and on the sunrise of the city. A panchang for another city or tradition can therefore differ by a day. Follow the one your family uses.
