The nine Navratri colours, day by day
All times are IST. Tithi times hold for all of India; sunrise, sunset, moonrise and the muhurat windows are for Nagpur, in the North and Central Indian (purnimanta) tradition, and shift by a few minutes in other cities.
How it is commonly observed
- On the first morning many families set up the kalash (Ghatasthapana) and sow barley.
- One form of Durga is worshipped on each of the nine days, and many people fast for all or some of the days.
- Kanya puja is commonly done on Ashtami or Navami.
- Garba and dandiya are danced in the evenings in Gujarat and in many cities.
Where regions differ
In West Bengal, Assam and Odisha the last days are Durga Puja, from Shashthi to Vijayadashami. In Gujarat the nights are garba nights. In Karnataka the tenth day is Mysuru Dasara, and in the South the days are also kept as Golu or Bommai Kolu.

- Bengali (Kolkata): Friday, 1 Oct 2027
How the date is worked out
The rule: the day when the tithi runs at sunrise. When two days qualify, the one where the tithi covers more of that window; when none does, the day the tithi begins. The Sun and Moon positions are computed for each year (sidereal, Lahiri ayanamsa), so the dates are not copied from a printed list.
Questions about Navratri
When is Navratri in 2027?
Navratri 2027 is on Thursday, 30 Sep 2027, and in 2028 on Tuesday, 19 Sep 2028. The dates are worked out for Nagpur in the North and Central Indian tradition; the table above gives the tithi and muhurat times.
When is Ghatasthapana?
On the morning of the first day, while Pratipada runs. Many panchangs give a morning muhurat and Abhijit muhurat as a second choice. The day table shows the tithi at sunrise each day.
When are Ashtami and Navami?
Durga Ashtami is the day when Ashtami is at sunrise; the table also shows when Navami runs. When Ashtami and Navami share a day, many families do the kanya puja that day.
Why does another calendar show a different date?
A tithi begins and ends at the same moment all over India, but the festival day depends on the part of the day the tradition looks at (sunrise, midday, evening or midnight) and on the sunrise of the city. A panchang for another city or tradition can therefore differ by a day. Follow the one your family uses.
