How it is commonly observed
- The main puja is traditionally done at madhyahna, the middle part of the day.
- Many temples read from the Ramayana, and many homes do a simple puja with a cradle for the infant Ram.
- Many people fast until midday or through the day, and processions are held in many towns.
Where regions differ
Most of India keeps it on the same day. Some Vaishnava calendars keep it a day later in years when Navami runs at two middays. In parts of the South the nine days ending on Navami are kept as Sri Rama Navami celebrations.
All the regional calendars on this site that list it give the same date in 2027.
How the date is worked out
The rule: the day when the tithi runs during madhyahna, the middle fifth of the daytime. When two days qualify, the one where the tithi covers more of that window; when none does, the day the tithi begins. The Sun and Moon positions are computed for each year (sidereal, Lahiri ayanamsa), so the dates are not copied from a printed list.
Questions about Ram Navami
When is Ram Navami in 2027?
Ram Navami 2027 is on Thursday, 15 Apr 2027, and in 2028 on Monday, 3 Apr 2028. The dates are worked out for Nagpur in the North and Central Indian tradition; the table above gives the tithi and muhurat times.
Why is the puja at midday?
By tradition Shri Ram was born at midday, so the day is the one when Navami runs at madhyahna, the middle fifth of the daytime. The window in the table is that part of the day at Nagpur.
Is Ram Navami part of Navratri?
Yes. It is the ninth day of Chaitra Navratri, and many families end the Navratri fast after the Ram Navami puja or on the next day.
Why does another calendar show a different date?
A tithi begins and ends at the same moment all over India, but the festival day depends on the part of the day the tradition looks at (sunrise, midday, evening or midnight) and on the sunrise of the city. A panchang for another city or tradition can therefore differ by a day. Follow the one your family uses.
